I Wanna Be Like Them...

Overview
Loren, newspaper photo shoot.

The set…
This was a set made entirely out of newspaper. The walls were covered in newspaper and then the set was filled with separate scrunches pieces of paper and then the model would sit with in the newpaper.

The message…
This set design and photo shoot was about the pressure of the media on young girls. The media has a massive influence and impact on our everyday life, its in the form of magazines, newspaper, internet, radio ect. In magazines girls see these beautiful, skinny, flawless models and want to look like these unrealistic figures. There is so much pressure from the media telling girls how they should dress, how to do their make-up and hair, how they should look, how they should act, how skinny to be and if you basically don’t do what they say your uncool, not normal and no one will like you. There is so much of this bullshit which is dished out and fed to girls, and the younger you are the more vulnerable and naive you are to it, my point is that there these message are everywhere and that there is so much of it that we are practically submerged- thus is symbolized by the set being filled with newspaper and Loren looks to be naked and having a bath in it.

The model…
The models name is Loren who I used, she is a friend from school and is 17 years old and her background it African and English. She was very good to work with for photo shoots because she is also in my Studio Arts Photography class and has an understanding of what does look good and bad in photo shoots. She also takes very good photos and does some brilliant poses.

The hair…
For the hair I just left it from the previous set because by not it was really messy and wild from moving around and really contrasted with the idea of ‘erfect’.

The make-up…
I only used eyeliner for her eyes, just to emphasis them and dramatise them a bit and make her look a bit sad.

The clothes and costume…
Loren was just wearing shorts and a singlet top worn as a boob tube and then tucked sheets of newspaper into them so it looked like she was naked, to dramatize being submerged in the media, that you could practically bath in it there mediums.

Lighting
For lighting I used natural light and flash light. Klieg light was an idea to trial but I didn’t have access to it at the time of the photo shoot.
With using natural light that meant that I had to turn off the flash off on the digital camera which seemed to affect the quality of the images in that it made them blurry and distorted, I haven’t incorporated many of these photos in my folio due to this, but if I had, it was because I really liked the composition of the photo and that I will try to see if I can fix them with photoshop later down the track.
Flash light seemed to be the best because natural light couldn’t get all the way into the cube because of it’s depth and angle of lighting during the time of day of the photoshoot, but the flash seemed to be able to help this and get into the box to lighten it up as well as the model when I took a picture.
